Spicing Up The Kitchen

SUTK - for my partner

A new swap group focused on modern handmade goods for the kitchen. Think hot pads, aprons, table runners, place mats … And another secret swap.

Check out the flickr group for more photos.

So of course I joined.

After some safe flickr/blog stalking, I decided on making an apron and potholders with an owl theme. The main apron design uses applique and is double sided with a bright yellow lemon fabric on back.

Whoooo is on my head?

This is a great apron pattern because the neck and straps are all one piece so you can easily adjust for any person – much easier with a secret partner and no measurements!

And the owl potholders are my “classic” set which have been blogged before – they seem to be making a hit as more have been requested for purchase!

Let’s Swap!

How about another fabric swap! The last two I-Spy Swaps were pretty successful, and covered several countries and plenty of US states! And swappers have been asking for another round, so I’m hoping for a good #3 :)

Now before I get all crazy with the guidelines, dates, and sign-ups, let me ask you what you want.

1. Shall we do another I-Spy fabric swap with child-oriented fabrics, or switch things up for a designer fabric square swap, like a charm pack?

2. Shall we do this before or after the holidays?

If interested, please leave a comment with answers so I can get a majority vote. Thanks!

{ Urban } HOME Goods – a modern swap

The goods

Through my Flickr swapping friends, I came across a modern swap and signed up. This swap is intended for online Flickr friends with a passion for sewing and like-minded fabrics who swap for a fabulous home dec items! It was another secret swap, and there were a lot of guidelines to follow, especially with fabric choices. My partner was from the UK and gave me a few hints on items she’d like to receive. A few on her list included an apron, pincushion, basket, and the color burgundy … plus I added a few fabric postcards.

The package off to my partner

And for me? Oh. Wow. Jewel’s Arm Candy sent me the most fabulous package!! … The photo below does not do any justice to seeing the fabulousness in person.

Look what I got!

The sewing machine cover is SO cute and matches my sewing room theme perfectly – and I’m in love with the fat birdies. Talking about birdies, “Pudge” sits and watches me sew away … Yes, the owl is named Pudge :) And the glamorous purse adorned with wooden handles … and in my favorite colors. Now I can say I finally own a purse … and a custom made one at that! And if that wasn’t enough, a whole series of designer fabrics are now all mine … all MINE!

Pincushion Pass: The swaps

My partner and I had a lot of fun creating and sewing pincushions for each other.

I Heart the Pincushion Swap

I happily received this lovely pincushion in the mail … the heart is just perfect for me! It’s already hanging next to my sewing machine and looking good. I like the “ravioli” on the front too. Lots of hand stitching done … very impressive. And the pocket was also filled with goodies!! So thank you very much for all the effort and sewing love you put into it!

Friendly owl, ladybug & flower pincushion

Here’s what I made for my partner. I used the Wild Flower Pincushion tutorial from the BHG website. Mr Owl was just a little extra fun, as she seemed to really like owls. And my partner seems to like it:
“THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! I love both the owl and the flower! My daughters really loved the owl too. I have a feeling I may be making some pillow sized friends around the holidays!!”
