Sometimes the smile of a child is the greatest gift. The WRAPPED IN HOPE program provides birthday quilts for children of prisoners. The program is run by Margaret’s Hope Chest, a quilting non-profit providing hope and comfort to those in need through the gift of a beautifully crafted quilt.
I signed up to sponsor Devon who was turning 10 on November 21st. He loves green, football and video games. My love for football turned me in that direction, so I made a football field quilt. I used strips of different green fabrics – a mix of cotton, flannel and soft comfy – to create the field. Then added football themed fabric squares in the middle – comparable to a team’s logo in the middle of a field. An applique of numbers and end zone letters, plus a fun border with goals finished off the creation. After a nice wash and iron, I packaged it up and sent it off to Devon. A few days later, I got this note:
“Hi, this is Devons mother, and i just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!! Devon loves his quilt and ran around the house with a smile across his face that i haven’t seen for years! He couldn’t stop talking about it and saying how cool it is and that he loves it so much! The fact that you included a card that said it was from his dad who is in prison, was priceless. Words cannot express how happy and blessed we feel from your kindness!!! Thank you sooooooo very much! The Quilt is amazing! May GOD bless you always as you’ve blessed us! Happy Holidays dear friends! :)”
Giving to others really brings so much to the giver – doesn’t it?
