Homemade Wine – Reracking Update

Wine at first reracking

My starter wine book states that first timers will always bottle their wine too early. I’ve decided I will NOT be one of those people, and am waiting out the full process. Which, as it turns out, is a lot of waiting. Since the initial creation back in early July, the wine has been hanging out in my dining room. I purchased an IKEA storage rack and several wine shelves as a precursor to housing 30 bottles of wine come December. It’s also doing a great job of stashing the empty bottles I’ve been happily collecting from friends. And the heavy carboy of wine is sitting on the bottom shelf, aging itself into a fine wine (let’s hope)! I just completed a reracking of the wine – syphon wine from one containter to another while being careful not to get any of the old yeast, clean out the glass jar, and syphon the wine back. It now sits for another few months and then its bottling time.

The Big E

The Big E

A few friends had been raving about “The Big E” for several years, but they always went during the middle of the week so I never had the chance to join. This year, I took a well-earned vacation day and joined them. The Big E is a large fair in West Springfield, Massachusetts held every year to celebrate the New England states. Wednesday happened to be Connecticut day, which worked out perfectly … you’d be surprised at how many people still crowded the fair. I spent a good 8 hours walking around, learning about farm animals, eating everything, and basically having a great day.

Cream Puffs

I never thought of “Best in Show” cow competitions, or sleeping next to your prized cow during the week. There were farm animals, craft booths, amusement rides, and a daily parade. And even a large sculpture made of out butter! I think the best part was the “Avenue of States.” Each New England state is housed in a replica of their original capitol buildings. Walking through each one, you learn about the people, products and attractions each state has to offer.

Loaded Maine Potato

The best, of course, was the food. I enjoyed not one, but two fully loaded Maine potatoes, lobster rolls, blueberry pie and my first maple cotton candy. I was stuffed by the time we made it to Rhode Island, which is where I’ll start next year – so much yumminess! If you are in the area during Big E season, it’s definitely worth a stop.

Rawley’s Deep Fried Hot Dogs

Deep Fried Dogs

I first heard about Rawley’s on the Food Network’s “The Best Thing I Ever Ate: Totally Fried” show. Alex Guarnaschelli raved about Rawley’s famous hot dogs that are cooked in a deep fryer and then finished on the grill to crisp them up. And, it’s located in Fairfield, CT … only a 20 minute drive for me – without the lovely traffic of course.

So I grabbed two friends and headed over. It’s a one of a kind place – very drive-in-esq, with an ordering counter, a few booths off the one side, and names/words/sayings carved or written on every possible surface. There was also a sign stating it was “Martha Stewart’s favorite hot dog stand” … so I knew I was in the right place. The traditional Rawley’s “works” dog is smothered with mustard, relish, sauerkraut and crunchy cooked bacon bits. I went for it, sans sauerkraut, along with a chocolate milkshake. Between the three of us, we had a chili-cheese dog, a hellish relish dog, the works – one with kraut, one without – and a plain – to try one naked for full evaluation.

I wasn’t totally wowed after hearing all the ravings, but they were definitely good and hit the spot.

{ Urban } HOME Goods – a modern swap

The goods

Through my Flickr swapping friends, I came across a modern swap and signed up. This swap is intended for online Flickr friends with a passion for sewing and like-minded fabrics who swap for a fabulous home dec items! It was another secret swap, and there were a lot of guidelines to follow, especially with fabric choices. My partner was from the UK and gave me a few hints on items she’d like to receive. A few on her list included an apron, pincushion, basket, and the color burgundy … plus I added a few fabric postcards.

The package off to my partner

And for me? Oh. Wow. Jewel’s Arm Candy sent me the most fabulous package!! … The photo below does not do any justice to seeing the fabulousness in person.

Look what I got!

The sewing machine cover is SO cute and matches my sewing room theme perfectly – and I’m in love with the fat birdies. Talking about birdies, “Pudge” sits and watches me sew away … Yes, the owl is named Pudge :) And the glamorous purse adorned with wooden handles … and in my favorite colors. Now I can say I finally own a purse … and a custom made one at that! And if that wasn’t enough, a whole series of designer fabrics are now all mine … all MINE!
