AQS Lancaster – Day 3

In progress work

Up early for class – Elegant Slender Curvies with Dianne Hire. This was a fun technique to learn and she has a book on her curvy sewing, but it’s so much more interesting to see it taught in person. Time flew by so quickly that I wish it wasn’t just a half-day class. For my class piece, I used a flowery fabric for color inspiration – blues, yellows, golds – and have enough extra pieces that I’ve decided on finishing the project and making a throw pillow.

I was back in and around the show arena after class. There were just too many interesting things to see that several hours were needed. I have plenty of “project idea” photos that I will be busy for years! I did pick up a few Asian fabrics and a lovely geisha pattern and also this fun fabric shrinking iron-on … there will most definitely be a post when I get to using that. Sensory overload.

My class creation

And in the middle of all that I made a HUGE decision, finally made the leap and purchased a long-arm quilting machine – HQ18 Avanté! That’s an 18″ throat which gives a lovely 15″ of quilting space. And because of the show, they were offering the demo machines at a big discount … so I have the machine boxed up in my car and the 12ft frame is being shipped on Monday. Yes, 12ft – the magic size to fit a king-size quilt. And once everything arrives in CT, my HQ rep comes out to help put it all together and give the first how-to lesson. I can’t express how excited I am in words … you will just have to wait and see it in my work!

A fancy meal at Gibraltar restaurant finished off the day in style. The menu was Mediterranean influenced with fabulous fish dinners – my choice was the Maine Lobster Fettuccine with local sweet corn, cherry tomatoes, crème fraiche, herbs and shaved reggiano. In one word – delicious.

And tomorrow I make my return drive back to Stamford and grumpy kitties :) Great mini vacation!

AQS Lancaster – Day 2

After a free Irish dinner at the hotel on Thursday, I crashed hard for the night and gave myself a nice and slow Friday morning – no need to rush around and get to work :) And today is the most beautiful warm break from winter … around 75!! and in March!!

AQS Lancaster

I headed over to the show to check things out as I didn’t have a chance yesterday. So. Much. Awesomeness. Half of the show room was dedicated to showing off the fabulous pieces entered into various competitions and the other half was for vendors selling machines, fabric, patterns, and much more. Even a wood quilter!

Next was a break for fresh and creamy made-on-location ice cream at the cutest ice cream parlor – Carmen and David’s Creamery. They learned ice cream making from Penn State’s renowned Ice Cream school … we are!! Delicious. And follow that with a juicy steak and micro-brewed beer from Iron Hill Brewery.

And an early night as I have class tomorrow at 830am.

AQS Lancaster – Day 1

4 blocks in a medallion layout

I’m on a mini vacation to the American Quilter’s Society quilt show in Lancaster PA. The show is 4 days long and besides the main show also includes workshops, lectures and classes … and even a Ricky Tims concert. I’m here for 3 days (woo hoo!) and signed-up for two classes.

So this morning I got up at 4am and made the drive from CT to Lancaster … much less traffic at that time, but I’m still amazed at how many people are up early for long commutes to work. That really makes me appreciate my less-than-a-mile walk to work :)

Close-up on the block

On my arrival to the Lancaster County Convention Center, I went straight to my first class – Ocean Sunrise taught by Karen Kay Buckley. The class used a specific pattern to learn techniques for paper-piecing sharp skinny points and machine appliqué on curves. I’ve done both before, but there are so many different ways to do things and tips to learn along the way that I really enjoyed it.

And after a fun 6 hours on a fabulous Janome machine, I completed four full blocks and several more are almost there. Plus, my fabric was the highlight of the class so I felt even more excited with my color choices. The ‘Sea Life’ quilt fabric is from the Oceanica collection by In the Beginning and has mermaids, frogs, seahorses, fish & more … plus it’s a fabulous green color :)

I will post another photo when I get more blocks completed and sewn together.

Vrooom! Vrooom! Name suggestions?

Hot stuff!

There were enough beautiful summer weekends to get working on the bike and out on the streets. Special thanks to my biker friend – he’s been very patient with my mechanic’s questions, riding expertise, and picking up the bike when it, umm, fell over :) And on top of all that, he keeps a roof over my bike!

I spent a few hours riding up and down the street to get into a comfortable operating zone. I honestly can’t believe that after riding 16hrs (the first time on a bike) and a test, the DMV hands over a motorcycle license. I’m lucky to have a friend and a father who both ride that helped me get to road worthy riding.

Hmm … I still need to name the bike. Suggestions?

*Note: I wear full leathers out on the roads. In the photo I was just up and down the street and it was way too hot for leathers and only 25mph!

I ran. I uploaded. I got blogged!

When the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit first came out, I was one of the geeks that grabbed one. My foot shape doesn’t work well with Nike shoes, so I bought a shoe lace snap-on for holding the sensor. Plugged it into my iPod nano and started tracking my runs. And when I sync my nano to my computer, it automatically uploads my workout information to the Nike+ Running website.

On January 22, I happened to upload the 200,000,000 mile on the site … and the Nike+ team wanted to celebrate the milestone. So I answered some questions and wound up on their blog :)

Chocolate 911! Chocolate 911!

Chocolate Martini

Chocolate cravings: you know you have them.

This past weekend I persuaded a few friends to indulge in their chocolate cravings while helping the Red Cross provide assistance to neighbors in need … at the 2nd American Red Cross Valley Chocolate 9-1-1 Extravaganza!

Various local businesses staged their tables around a large conference room at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Shelton, CT. Vendors included Liquid Lunch, Il Palio Restaurant, Pilgrim Bar-B-Q, Slap Your Mama Poundcake and more.

Brisket with Chocolate Chipotle

We went around the room (several times) and sampled chocolate martinis, chocolate lasagna, chocolate steak, chocolate cannolis, chocolate mousse,

Chocolate Strasagna

chocolate footballs (covered strawberries) and chocolate marinated brisket on white chocolate baguettes! All of this while sipping on champagne. Be jealous!

In our group, we gave a big thumbs up to the martinis, and the consensus for the best chocolate mousse was from Il Palio – and it turns out they won 2nd place Critics Choice, 2nd place People’s Choice, and 1st place most creative.

And now some of us are even chocolate celebrities – we made it on the “Valley Independent Sentinel” news video! Check out the first 20 seconds for a glimpse of Jennie, JQ and myself in the background. Yes, we are drinking the martinis :)

Pumpkin Fest ’09

Some fabulous creations ...

Some fabulous creations ...

Legs!

Legs!

Miss Jeannine has started a tradition and hosts a very fabulous Pumpkin Fest at her house every year right around Halloween. Friends, families, little hyper children and dogs all join together for a fun night. There is always an amazing spread of drinks (mostly alcoholic in nature), delicious food, and yummy desserts. Plus, an innovative pumpkin carving session and, of course, pumpkin seed roasting.

Drinks featured apple and spice liquors, homemade pumpkin eggnog, harvest beer and hard cider. And for munching there was veggie apps, chicken & squash, chili, various yummy quiches and corn chowder. If you still had room, there was caramel apple cream cheese dip, spice cookies, and many cupcakes of vegan variety. Yes, that included a unique avocado icing.

Toasty toasty!

Toasty toasty!

As for the seed roasting queen, she decided on a 3-way with just salted, garlic salt, and a unique entry of Singapore Seasoning. This seasoning is hand-mixed from Penzeys Spices and includes tellicherry black pepper, lemon peel powder, citric acid, garlic, onion, turmeric, coriander, cumin, ginger, nutmeg, fennel, cinnamon, fenugreek, white pepper, cardamom, cloves and cayenne red pepper. Phew! And amazing!

Great party JQ! Let’s do it again in say, 364 days?

Go Shorty! It’s Your Birthday!

Blow out those candles!

Blow out those candles!

A new apartment and turning 27 … that’s 2 good reasons to throw a party! Fabulous drinks and delicious (homemade, of course) food was served with an overall “Asian inspired” theme. Everyone seemed to have a great time and very little of the food was left! And no one followed the rules and brought presents anyway :)

Check out all the party pics on picasa!

Oktoberfest

Brats, potato salad and coleslaw

Brats, potato salad and coleslaw

First, a history lesson. The original “Oktoberfest” occurred in Munich, on October 18, 1810 for the commemoration of marriage between Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Who knew?!

In 2009 southern Connecticut, it means drinking Oktoberfest beer, munching on bratwurst and hanging with friends in the Old Heidelberg Beer Garden. The sounds of music in the background was soothing compared to the wild German rap in the car ride – well everyone prepares for an

Pure Oktoberfest

Pure Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest in their own way :) There was plenty of traditional meat to pick from including wieners, brats, and pork shank, but the lack of spatzle was disappointing. So I conquered the meaty potato salad and coleslaw instead. Yum! No vegetarian would have lasted at this festival. I also dabbled in the German beers offered, however, none of them included my favorite wheaty citrus beer arena. The desserts on the other hand, were perfectly wrapped in plenty of crust and sweetness. Another Oktoberfest celebrated!
